Donald Trump has a whole new FBI problem
Donald Trump has spent the past couple years falsely accusing the FBI of having illegally spied on his 2016 campaign. During that time, one top Trump campaign adviser after another has been convicted of serious felonies, making clear that the FBI was simply doing its job of pursuing criminals. Yesterday things came to a head when the Department of Justice Inspector General released a report confirming that the FBI was indeed justified in its actions.
Current FBI Director Christopher Wray was handpicked by Donald Trump, but best anyone can tell, Wray cares a lot more about doing his job than he does about trying to save Trump’s failing presidency. Accordingly, Wray went on television to spell out how the IG report confirmed that the FBI wasn’t maliciously targeting the Trump campaign. Suffice it to say that Trump wasn’t happy about it.
In response, Trump posted this tweet: “I don’t know what report current Director of the FBI Christopher Wray was reading, but it sure wasn’t the one given to me. With that kind of attitude, he will never be able to fix the FBI, which is badly broken despite having some of the greatest men & women working there!”
The key is that Donald Trump simply posted a frustrated and whiny tweet about FBI Director Christopher Wray, as opposed to firing him, or even threatening to fire him. This suggests that Trump is afraid to take the risk of firing Wray at a time when he’s being impeached, or perhaps Senate Republicans have flat out told him that he’s not allowed to fire Wray, and that they won’t confirm any replacement nominee. In any case, Trump has a real problem here: he’s stuck with a non-corrupt FBI Director whom he’s afraid to fire, at a time when his presidency is falling apart and he’s on his way to prison if he loses the election.
