Three weeks is a long time, and a lot of things can happen. But as things now stand, and if the Resistance keeps plugging away in important races, the Democrats are set to take control of one or both houses of Congress after the November elections. Even the ever-delusional Donald Trump now seems to be aware of this (perhaps his handlers have recently broken the news to him), and now he’s already publicly addressing the possibility. In so doing, he’s giving away his next big excuse.

No, we’re not talking about Trump claiming the midterms were rigged in favor of the Democrats; we already know he’s going to float that in the hope of convincing himself that his party didn’t lose seats due to his unpopularity. But this rationale won’t get Trump anywhere in the real world. So instead Trump is floating the idea of working with the Democrats after they take control. He doesn’t actually want to have to do that, but that’s the point – he won’t have to.

If the American public hands control to the Democrats next month, it’ll be with the simple mandate of stopping Donald Trump and bringing him to justice for his ongoing crime spree. The Democrats will use their newfound control of every House committee to launch investigations into every one of his scandals, in the name of dismantling him. From time to time, certain nonpartisan legislation does have to be passed, but even as the Democrats are occasionally working with him to do that, they’ll be constantly busting him like a piñata and serving him up for his ouster.

Even as this process is playing out, Donald Trump is going to sit there and whine about how the Democrats are unwilling to compromise with him. He’ll offer to meet them halfway on something, and the Democrats will reject him, because halfway between normal and his deranged extremism is still unacceptable. For however much longer Trump is in office before he’s ousted, he’s going to try to paint himself as a guy who’s trying to be bipartisan, and who isn’t allowed to be. We’ll see if anyone buys it.
