Even more GOP Senators bail on Donald Trump’s sinking ship
Last night we brought you the story of how Republican Senator Chuck Grassley has decided not to attend the Republican National Convention. Even though Grassley was using the coronavirus as an excuse instead of flat out saying that he didn’t want to be seen standing next to Donald Trump, it was still a kick in Trump’s teeth, considering how hard Trump is trying to convince everyone that the coronavirus crisis isn’t happening.
Now it turns out Grassley is just one of five GOP Senators who are confirmed not to be in attendance at the convention. Lamar Alexander, Mitt Romney, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski will also be skipping the event. This list isn’t particularly surprising. Romney openly hates Trump. Alexander is retiring. Collins and Murkowski keep trying to avoid being seen as either for or against Trump.
Of course all these people – except Romney, who voted to convict and remove – are cowards. They’re just trying to avoid having to stand on Donald Trump’s sinking ship, particularly at a a very dangerous and pointless in-person convention during a pandemic that will likely end up being widely viewed negatively by the media and the public. But the fact that they’re tacitly betting against Trump is a sign of things to come. We expect the list of non-attendees to end up being a lot higher than five.
