Now we know why Roger Stone has been babbling about “espionage”
Roger Stone is going to be indicted and arrested soon. We know this, not only based on publicly available details about grand jury proceedings, but also because Roger Stone went on television this weekend and told us he expects to be indicted soon. He then took things further in a Rolling Stone interview, insisting that he didn’t commit “espionage.” That was odd, considering that particular criminal charge hasn’t yet been brought against anyone in the Trump-Russia scandal. Now we know why Stone is fixated on it: he committed it.
Stone claimed under oath that he never communicated directly with Julian Assange while he was interacting with WikiLeaks during the election. Robert Mueller has since lined up a number of Stone’s associates, who have testified that Stone confessed to them that he did communicate with Assange. This alone would put him on the hook for perjury charges, before even getting to the question of what he was discussing with Assange. It turns out those discussions were even dicier than we thought.
Roger Stone asked Assange for dirt on Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election, according to emails reviewed by the Wall Street Journal. In other words, Stone conspired with a foreign national to try to alter the outcome of the election, which is a crime. Throw in the fact that Assange participated in a cyberterrorism conspiracy against the United States when he published DNC emails stolen by Russian hackers, and yeah, Stone committed espionage.
Earlier, we asked the question of why Roger Stone was so uniquely focused on “espionage” when there are so many various criminal charges the grand jury could be considering. Now it makes sense: Stone is obsessed with espionage because he committed espionage, and because he’s realized he was dumb enough to put it in writing. This also helps explain why Stone’s close pal Alex Jones is suddenly insisting that he’s also being investigated for espionage.
