Even as Michael Cohen continues to carry out an increasingly weird endgame that can only logically end with him cutting a plea deal against Donald Trump, Cohen’s nemesis Michael Avenatti is drawing the line. On a day that began with ABC News reporting on an off-camera interview that it had conducted with Cohen, it ended with Avenatti putting things in perspective.

Michael Cohen gave an interview to Good Morning America over the weekend, insisting that it be off-camera. That left George Stephanopoulos, the interviewer, to characterize the interview on live national television this morning. The upshot: Cohen doesn’t seem sure if he wants to defend himself, sell Trump out, or bite his own lip. This may have something to do with the fact that Cohen has reportedly been informed that he’s just days away from being arrested if he doesn’t cut a plea deal first; he shouldn’t be running his mouth in advance of criminal charges or a plea deal.

Cohen’s half baked off-camera interview led Michael Avenatti, who is suing Cohen on behalf of Stormy Daniels, to call the situation what it is. Here’s what Avenatti tweeted about the matter: “If this is about “love of country” as Mr. Cohen claims, then he should come clean NOW. He does not have to wait to be indicted/arrested. And if he is waiting for that, it tells you everything you need to know about his true intentions.”

So where does this leave us? As Palmer Report pointed out yesterday, two things stand out when it comes to Michael Cohen. The first is that he’s announced he’s ending his joint legal defense with Donald Trump, which has proven to be a telltale sign throughout the Trump-Russia scandal that someone is indeed about to flip. The second is that Cohen is no longer even trying to win his civil court case against Avenatti, which suggests Cohen is instead focused on his own endgame with regard to criminal charges.
