It’s all downhill from here
While the past few weeks have been dreadful for Donald Trump, the next few weeks will certainly be even worse. Whether it’s Trump’s old friend Roger Stone revealing that someone claims to have overheard him telling Trump that WikiLeaks would be releasing DNC emails stolen by Russian hackers, or the revelation that Trump’s former campaign chairman Paul Manafort recently sought a plea deal with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, the coming weeks will be a nightmare for Trump. And all of this is before Democrats win at least the House, and maybe the Senate, in the November elections.
With things going extremely badly for Trump, Republicans in Congress are not doing much better. The first two Congressmen to endorse Trump’s presidential candidacy, Chris Collins and Duncan Hunter, were recently indicted for insider trading and campaign finance violations, respectively. While the crimes the two Congressmen are now in trouble for are certainly concerning, it appears other Republicans in Congress are worried about even more serious charges should they lose control of the House.
Even Trump’s most vocal supporter, Fox News reciter of lies and propaganda Sean Hannity, opened his radio show on Monday warning, “investigation, investigation, investigation, impeachment. That’s what’s going to happen if Democrats take back the House.” A new report from Axios confirms these fears, saying “Congressional Republicans are getting ready for hell.” With fears of losing power mounting, Republicans have put together a spreadsheet of all the investigations they expect Democrats to launch once they control all House committees.
The list of coming investigations, which was created based on over a hundred formal requests House Democrats have already made, includes nearly every Congressional committee. These investigations, according to Axios, would include requests for administration officials to testify, subpoenas to obtain communications about decisions to create policies, and requests to have access to sworn testimony, and would “turn the Trump White House into a 24/7 legal defense operation.”
With so many investigations into the skeletons in the Republican closets, there is good reason for House GOP members to fear losing power. While everyone enjoys being in charge and controlling the gavel, losing such power, and being personally investigated for crimes up to and including treason, certainly explains why Republicans are “getting ready for hell.”
