Donald Trump keeps trying to convince us (and more importantly himself) that he’s somehow more popular and viable than ever. He’s quoting nonsense polls so he can pretend he’s winning. He’s insisting his base now consists of 75% of the country. He’s even claiming that Kamala Harris’ rally crowds are fake and AI generated.

But Trump’s increasingly desperate fantasies aren’t fooling anyone. It doesn’t look like Trump is even really fooling himself. On Sunday Trump shared a social media post whose first two words were “Don’t panic.”

Don’t panic? Really? When has anyone ever had to say “don’t panic” unless they’re in a position where things are bad enough to be panicking? The fact that Trump is out there telling his own people not to panic is a big deal. It means he’s truly worried about his prospects, and he’s worried that his own supporters are going to give up.

I always like to remind everyone that in a competitive election, you can’t win unless you decide you’re going to win and then go out and put in the work required to win. If Trump and his base start to believe they can’t win, they won’t put in the work required to win. That gives us an opportunity to roll up our sleeves and run up the score while they’re pouting. Let’s get to work!
