Don’t lose the plot

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Here’s what I fear: the filibuster will be neutered, our major legislation will pass, and these two years will be a huge success. But because so many media pundits are pushing the false notion that our entire agenda is “doomed” unless we kill the filibuster, misguided liberal activists will still declare the whole thing a massive failure simply because we didn’t kill the filibuster.

I don’t remember anyone saying “Let’s work hard and win the 2020 election so we can fulfill our only goal, which is to kill the filibuster!” That was never the conversation. But because the media has cemented the false notion that the filibuster must die for anything to pass, the plot is increasingly being lost.

Should the filibuster die? Yes. Do we have the votes for that? No, and we won’t during this term. But we do have the votes to neuter the filibuster, which will happen. Our legislation will pass. But if you lose the plot and you call these two years a failure, we’ll lose the 2022 elections. Again, don’t lose the plot.
