“Don’t do anything”
There’s an old SNL Celebrity Jeopardy sketch in which Alex Trebek tells the contestants that they’ll all get points if they “don’t do anything” but all three of them quickly screw it up. The premise is that they’re such idiots, they’re incapable of just sitting there and taking the win. That’s what comes to mind when I think about just how badly House Republicans screwed up with Tuesday’s public hearing.
Weeks ago, former DOJ Special Counsel and dishonest sack of crap Robert Hur put out a report which portrayed President Biden as being forgetful and clueless. It was easy enough to pick apart the report; Hur’s summary didn’t even match his own report. But some small amount of damage was done to Biden’s reputation nonetheless. And if the Republicans had any sense they’d have stopped right there.
Instead House Republicans decided to bring in Robert Hur as a star witness in a public hearing, so they could try to amplify the lies he’d told about President Biden. But in doing so, House Republicans seemingly forgot two things. First, Hur’s claims were easily refuted nonsense. And second, House Democrats were also going to get the opportunity to question Hur during this hearing.
Sure enough, as one House Democrat after another poked at Robert Hur’s claims, he fell apart like a wet paper towel. It wasn’t just that Hur was unable to advance the claims he’d made about Biden. It’s that as a result of this hearing, the mainstream media has ended up writing headlines making clear that Hur’s prior claims about Biden are false. Democrats also used the hearing as an opportunity to drive home the point that it’s Donald Trump who has memory problems and cognitive problems, not Biden.
By holding this hearing, the Republicans have made it a lot harder for them to be able to use Robert Hur’s report against President Biden during the 2024 election. They should have known coming in that Hur would fall apart if he was challenged. If they had simply adhered to “Don’t do anything” and decided not to hold this hearing, they’d be in better shape right now. But then again, they are indeed idiots.
