Donald Trump’s terrible night
It’s safe to say that the former guy had a bad night on Tuesday. Not only did Brian Kemp win outright in Georgia against a has-been who lost re-election in 2020 and couldn’t survive the January run-off, but Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger also managed to fend off a primary challenger in Trump’s handpicked candidate Rep. Jody Hice – and managed to do it by double digits, avoiding a runoff that would have further complicated things for the general election.
It’s a pretty resounding rejection of Donald Trump’s most anti-democratic ways, as the former guy is a big reason Raffensperger has become a household name in the first place.
We still have yet to see how this will play out in the general election in what is a fairly diverse state with just a bluish tinge – and someone as unpredictable as the former guy, as there’s still the possibility that he or his fan club may still cause problems for the Republican candidate in the days leading up to the election, or the possibility that they may find themselves forced to beg the former guy to campaign for them (which on Tuesday got even less likely), but the good news is that we can win in November if we put in the work – particularly as this rematch will inevitably bring about questions of how active a role Kemp played in overseeing his first election when he served as Georgia’s Secretary of State.
There’s the possibility that Democrats allowed to vote in the state’s open primaries may have helped add to the size of Raffensperger’s impressive win and this should be a sign we’re off to the races for the 2022 general election.
