Donald Trump’s March 4th insurrection cash grab
Based on this week’s congressional testimony, it’s clear that Trump supporters and right wing lunatics believe they’re going to be able to somehow magically overthrow the United States government tomorrow. We’ll see whether they try anything violent tomorrow, but there’s no chance they’ll succeed in their hallucinatory goals. Here’s the thing, though.
Donald Trump’s struggling hotel in Washington DC – the one that he recently tried to sell but couldn’t find a buyer for – is charging severely jacked up nightly rates right now. It’s pretty clear that Trump’s goons are staying at his hotel while in DC for whatever they think they’re going to do on March 4th. It’s also clear that this whole thing is a cash grab for Trump. In fact you have to wonder if he and his co-conspirators have been promoting the March 4th hysteria specifically because he wanted to be able to charge high hotel rates this week.
If proof emerges that Trump and/or his allies hyped up the March 4th insurrection talk with the specific intent of cashing in on it, then that’ll make for an easy criminal case against them. It’s a lot easier to prove that you were criminally inciting others to break the law when there was a financial motivation for you to do so.
Meanwhile, this leaves the open question of what will happen tomorrow. All we have to go on is what we’ve seen happen thus far. Trump’s inept goons had no idea what they were doing on January 6th, but they were significantly aided by the lack of proper law enforcement to begin with, and the delayed National Guard response by the Pentagon. When Trump’s inept goons gathered again on January 20th, they were met with a proper law enforcement response, and so they didn’t even try anything.
So the big question for tomorrow will be whether the proper level of law enforcement personnel is already in place around the key buildings in Washington DC. Trump’s goons are bully-cowards, which means they only like to take provocative action when the deck is stacked in their favor. When they’re faced with a strong response, they tend to run and hide. One can hope that law enforcement will in fact put overwhelming forces in place tomorrow accordingly.
