Donald Trump’s lawyers just laid an egg in Supreme Court appeal

When the U.S. Court of Appeals ruled that Donald Trump had no presidential immunity in his criminal cases, it was pretty much the end of the road for Trump. All that was left was for him to appeal to the Supreme Court, and for the Supreme Court to decide that it once again didn’t want to stick its neck out to help Trump.

Of course the media then predictably tried to convince us that the Supreme Court was going to slow walk this until after the election. When the Supreme Court gave Jack Smith a week to file his response, one talking head on MSNBC even insisted that this was proof that the case would somehow stretch on forever. Because, as we all know, February plus one week equals November.

But then back in the real world, Jack Smith took about a day to file his response. Just because you’re given a week, doesn’t mean you have to wait a week. Now Trump and his legal team have filed their rebuttal today to Smith’s filing. Interestingly enough, Trump and his team didn’t take up the full allotted time either.

Trump’s filing today is almost jarringly inept. It does nothing to even try to make an argument that Trump should be granted presidential immunity, or even that the trial should be dragged out. Even if the Supreme Court wanted to help Trump out – which it keeps signaling that it doesn’t – this laughable filing would make such a thing nearly impossible.

Two things stand out here. First, this filing from Trump’s team is precisely the kind of self aggrandizing wishful thinking gibberish that we typically hear coming out of Trump’s mouth. In other words, instead of trying to make a winning filing, Trump’s team gave him the kind of losing filing that his senile mind thinks is going to help him.

Second, Trump’s lawyers didn’t even wait the maximum amount of time to file this. They’re not trying to drag this out. It’s as if a senile Trump is convinced that he’s going to win this Supreme Court case, and not only has his attorneys making gibberish filings accordingly, he has them doing it rapidly – so he can win as soon as possible.

We seem to be witnessing yet another instance of Donald Trump’s worsening senility being his undoing on all fronts. Even if there is a very narrow and unrealistic path for Trump’s Supreme Court “presidential immunity” appeal to go well for him, he’s not taking that path – at all. There’s no strategy here, other than a senile man living out a simplistic fantasy about a magic carpet rescue that isn’t coming.
