Donald Trump’s criminal trial sentencing is finally, belatedly, bizarrely, upon us

Today is finally the day. It’s not coming within the context that we wanted, or within a timeframe that can do us any good. Yet Donald Trump’s criminal trial sentencing is indeed today. The whole thing just seems… bizarre.

This sentencing was originally scheduled for last summer. If it had happened when it was supposed to, there’s no doubt that Trump would have lost the election. Trump only won the election by about 1% of the vote, nationwide and in the deciding swing states. It’s intuitively obvious that a criminal trial sentencing last summer would have swayed more than one percent of voters. I trust I don’t even have to explain how obvious this is.

Yet because Judge Merchan delayed Trump’s sentencing hearing until after the election, an overtly politically biased decision that was misguidedly made in the name of trying to avoid appearing to be politically biased, Trump is now President-elect of the United States, and today’s hearing – which would have sent him to prison – is now nothing more than an embarrassing blip for him before he goes back to committing more crimes.

Of course Trump’s sentencing hearing is taking place today because the U.S. Supreme Court ruled yesterday that it must happen. Oh, so now the Supreme Court wants to hold Trump accountable, now that it’s too late to matter. Just like Judge Merchan finally wants to hold Trump accountable, now that it’s too late to matter. For all the endless griping about the DOJ and the Attorney General, it was the judicial system that betrayed the United States and handed the election Trump. Let’s not forget that.

Our courts are broken. Because of it, convicted felon Donald Trump will merely be handed embarrassment today instead of a trip to a prison cell. The broken nature of our Judicial Branch is a glaring problem and it’s been dogging this nation for this entire century. Now that a convicted felon is about to be the one picking federal judges, it’s not going to get better. But at least we get to watch Trump squirm today, as a judge reminds everyone that Trump is indeed a criminal. If only that judge had done his job last year when he was supposed to.
