Donald Trump’s comeuppance

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

The sheer depth of Jack Smith’s investigation into attempts to overturn the 2020 election is coming into view. Of course, the target letter was sent to Trump, but as he did in the classified documents case, Smith continues his investigation. The Guardian reported that prosecutors have evidence to formally charge Trump with violating the statutes outlined in the target letter. A previously undisclosed charge relates to violation of civil rights, which, when you read the statute, relates to Trump’s repeated attempts to pressure Mike Pence into violating the law. The remaining statutes seem to focus on the fake elector scheme, but it may be going beyond that.

DC News reported that the previously unreported statute was used against the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. DC News spoke with Norm Eisen, counsel during Trump’s first impeachment, who believes that Smith nixed the Insurrection Act because it’s “risky,” he suggested that “Smith has offered an elegant solution.” While the law addressed civil rights as it related to Blacks during Reconstruction, the law is broad and has been used in acts involving voter fraud or conspiracies to commit voter fraud, which is right in line with what Trump did. To bolster his charges, Smith reviewed voter fraud claims by subpoenaing security footage from an Atlanta polling site, which Raffensperger’s office confirmed Smith received (NBC News). This polling site was in the news before, as both Trump and Rudy Giuliani accused two poll workers of committing fraud. Those workers successfully sued One America News Network and Rudy Giuliani for defamation and have reached an undisclosed settlement with OANN (Reuters). The evidence showed that the two women did nothing wrong, and that was backed up by video-likely the very video Smith now has.

Donald Trump has always done whatever he wanted to whomever he wanted, but he has met his match in Jack Smith. He has not only subpoenaed video in Georgia, but Smith has issued subpoenas to virtually every election official in each of the battleground states. While Trump and his lawyers worry about Smith’s evidence, Trump’s allies in Congress are looking for ways to stop Smith instead of doing their jobs. According to MSNBC, Trump called Kevin McCarthy after receiving the target letter, asking for his and Elise Stefanik’s help in fending off Smith, and Matt Gaetz introduced legislation directed at blocking funding to the special counsel’s office. It’s too little too late for such a move, and MSNBC reported that Gaetz has no takers.

Who in their mind would co-sponsor this trash? These people are supposed to be part of law and order in this country. Instead, they spend their time and waste taxpayer dollars trying to circumvent it. Let the man do his job. You best believe that if he was after Joe Biden, these same idiots would be silent. It is plain, unadulterated bullshit. They don’t even yet know what evidence Smith has, but it appears to be a lot, which is what has them all so scared. They might want to wise up before they must find real jobs that will require performance of those jobs.
