Donald Trump’s classified documents criminal trial date is set – and it’s terrible news for him
All along we’ve heard these silly narratives about how Donald Trump’s various criminal trials will somehow magically get pushed until after the 2024 election, as if Trump can just decide when he wants to go on trial. But nothing works that way in the real world.
Trump’s federal criminal trial in his Espionage Act scandal is now set for August 14th, 2023. It’s unlikely to actually happen on that date. There will be some delays along the way, as per usual in these kinds of trials. But Trump does not have a magic wand for delaying this trial as long as he likes. There is every reason in the world to expect that this trial will begin and end before 2023 is over.
In other words, Donald Trump is not going to make it to the 2024 election. That was never in the cards. Jack Smith, being a smart prosecutor who understands how trial proceedings really work, chose this timeframe for indicting Trump for a reason. He knew it left him more than enough time to get to trial – even with any delays along the way – well before the election.
