Donald Trump’s base gets ugly against Ron DeSantis

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Donald Trump is on the verge of criminal indictment in multiple jurisdictions, making it kind of a joke that anyone would be including him in the list of Republicans likely to be viable presidential candidates in 2024. But even as Trump sinks, what’s left of his base is not happy about how the attention is shifting elsewhere.

Ron DeSantis, who has all the personality of cardboard, has published a new book aimed at making himself look dominant. Instead it reveals him to be an insecure witless buffoon who’s overcompensating. Trump’s remaining supporters apparently aren’t happy about how much 2024 hype DeSantis is getting, and so they showed up outside DeSantis’ book event and began… protesting?

Is protesting the right word? What do you call it when people spend early 2023 standing in the parking lot of one potential 2024 candidate’s book signing while waving flags in support of a guy who’s on his way to prison?

What you call it is total chaos. Even though Donald Trump’s upcoming indictments, trials, convictions, and prison sentences are going to keep him from being a real 2024 candidate, the fact that his life is over means he has nothing left to lose. And since he couldn’t care less about the good of the Republican Party, he’s perfectly fine with turning what’s left of his base rabidly against other potential 2024 Republican candidates.

The eventual 2024 Republican nominee will need Donald Trump’s base in order to have any chance of winning the general election, but it’s clear that Trump is only interested in sowing division on his way down.
