Donald Trump got shot at, which was enough to give him the kind of attention he craves, and enough to get the media into going easy on him for awhile. But the attention and the kid gloves started to fade away once Kamala Harris entered the race and made Trump look old and feeble. The problem for Trump is not just that he’s lost the momentum in the race, which is bad for his prospects. It’s that he’s lost all the attention, which he can’t stand.

Accordingly, Trump is now trying a truly dumb idea to try to get attention. He’s decided to turn around and quickly hold another rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, the same place where he got shot at. The argument is that he’s going to show that he’s not afraid, and that he still loves the kind of small town right wingers who support him. But we all know what this is really about.

Trump has spent the past two days insisting that he got shot in the ear, even as the FBI Director has cast doubt on whether he got shot or cut. No one really cares which one it was. But it is a big deal that he’s possibly lying about getting shot. So now Trump has turned a political opportunity into a political scandal. And he’s only making it worse by going back to Butler, where he’ll go on and on about how he was supposedly shot in the ear.

Trump now seems intent on making this entire election a referendum on whether anyone believes that he got shot in the ear as opposed to cut in the ear. That’s beyond bizarre. He’s seeking attention at any cost, even if it’s detrimental to his prospects. This guy was born to lose.
