Donald Trump sure screwed himself with that one
If Donald Trump had made an argument for a realistic later trial date, he might have gotten somewhere. But when he yelled “2026” he gave the judge license to ignore him entirely. And now he’s stuck with just about the earliest trial date he could have gotten. Trump’s idiotic filings don’t help him, they hurt him.
If Trump had asked for May or June of 2024, maybe he’d have gotten it. It would have put him an inch closer to his pipe dream of pushing his trials past the election. But instead he demanded 2026, and he got stuck with March of 2024.
This is why you chuckle, not fret, when Trump makes these kinds of nonsense filings. The best case scenario for him is that it doesn’t help him at all. And some of these filings will directly work against him. We’re already seeing it.
And it’s not as if Trump is making these nonsense filings, knowing he’ll lose, so the resulting hearings will push things back by two weeks or whatever. His filings aren’t pushing the timeline back at all, not even by a day.
So what is Trump’s strategy with these filings? It’s becoming pretty obvious that there isn’t one. He’s yelling “DO SOMETHING” at his attorneys and they’re saying “Well we can make this filing but it won’t help us in any way,” and he’s saying “Do it anyway!” It’s just desperation and nothing more.
