When Mitch McConnell asserted this morning that Donald Trump only failed in his coronavirus response because he was impeached, it got a lot of attention for obvious reasons. It was absurdly disingenuous, even for McConnell. But the real story was that McConnell was admitting that Trump failed in his coronavirus response.

This is a fairly clear sign that Mitch McConnell no longer thinks there’s any chance Donald Trump’s handling of this crisis will end up being seen in a positive light. McConnell is laying the groundwork for the possibility that Trump will be so toxically unpopular heading into November, Republican Senators will have to throw Trump under the bus in order to have any chance at getting reelected.

Naturally, Donald Trump isn’t on board with this plan. He was asked during his press conference today whether he thought impeachment kept him from being able to respond properly to the coronavirus crisis. Trump responded by insisting that he’s been handling this crisis perfectly.

So now the Republican President of the United States and the Republican Senate Majority Leader are out there telling conflicting versions of what’s going on. They’re not remotely on the same page, and they’re not going to be on the same page heading into the election. This is likely to end poorly for at least one of them.
