For all the damage he’s done, Donald Trump’s tenure would be even more devastating for America if he understood how anything works. Trump routinely jumps into battles without doing his homework and without consulting with anyone who understands how politics and law work, and he frequently loses because of it. Today, Trump mistakenly declared victory on a key matter because he doesn’t understand the matter at hand.

This afternoon, Donald Trump tweeted that “The United States House of Representatives has just overwhelmingly voted to kill the Resolution on Impeachment, 332-95-1. This is perhaps the most ridiculous and time consuming project I have ever had to work on. Impeachment of your President … is now OVER.” Trump is so far removed from reality on this one, we’ll have to count the ways.

First, today’s vote doesn’t mean that impeachment is “over” or that it can’t happen; it simply means that it’s not happening today. House Democrats could still vote to impeach Trump tomorrow if they wanted to. That won’t happen tomorrow, but it’s clear Trump doesn’t understand as much. That’s before getting to his apparent failure to understand why House Democrats tabled the vote today.

As Palmer Report explained earlier this evening, House Democrats are in the process of fighting court battles to obtain the witness testimony and physical evidence they need, so they can launch the kind of impeachment tour de force that will actually have a chance of taking Donald Trump down. In the meantime, of course they tabled today’s impeachment motion, which wouldn’t have gone anywhere if it had passed. Trump is celebrating something he doesn’t understand, in the latest reminder that he’s as clueless and inept as he is corrupt and evil.
