Donald Trump keeps stepping in it – and Kamala Harris keeps making him pay for it

Donald Trump keeps saying awful things. The things coming out of his mouth are offensive, dangerous, and tone-deaf. But the things he’s saying are also increasingly self defeating and politically stupid. For instance, Trump keeps falsely claiming that the federal response to back to back hurricanes has been lacking. This has forced Republican officials in those states to admit that it’s not true. And it’s allowed Kamala Harris to spend the week hitting Trump hard over his lies, without looking politically opportunist in the process. Now it’s happened again.

This week Trump gave a speech in Detroit, to a group with “Detroit” in its name, in a room full of “Detroit” signage, and still didn’t seem to know what city he was in. He used his speech to bash Detroit, as if he were in some other more conservative city in Michigan. Once again it proved to be a stupid and costly mistake, as the Kamala Harris campaign immediately released an ad using Trump’s words about Detroit to motivate the city’s residents to turn out in higher numbers to vote against him.

Over and over again, Donald Trump keeps stepping in it – and Kamala Harris keeps making him pay for it. There’s a reason why Trump’s babysitters aren’t having him do nearly as many public appearances, mainstream media interviews, and swing state events as he should be doing. It’s because each time he opens his mouth there’s a good chance he’s just going to make things worse for himself. It’s not just that he’s screwing up. It’s that Harris is savvy enough to make him pay for it each time he does.
