Donald Trump just stepped in it
This past week a story leaked to the media about how the Republican National Committee was supposedly “reviewing” a document that would have unofficially named Donald Trump the Republican Party’s presumptive 2024 nominee for President. At the time, Palmer Report wrote that the story was probably leaked by Trump’s own people, and that the whole thing may have been a mere attempt at pressuring the RNC into doing something that it wasn’t even considering doing.
Sure enough, after the leak received immediate and widespread pushback, Trump announced just a few hours later that he was declining the RNC’s supposed offer to name him the presumptive nominee. In other words, the RNC told him it had no intention of doing so, and so he decide to “decline” it in order to save face. So the whole thing was merely yet another stupid failed stunt on Trump’s part. But now it’s gotten worse for him.
Nikki Haley, who came within ten points of defeating Donald Trump in New Hampshire and has suddenly become a real thorn in his side, now says that she managed to raise $1.4 million as a direct result of Trump’s failed attempt at pressuring the RNC into naming him the presumptive nominee.
It’s a good reminder that Donald Trump is (and always has been) comically lacking in political savvy. He tries a stupid stunt, it fails and backfires, and then the pundit class helpfully “explains” to us why it actually means Trump has us exactly where he wants us. But this is a guy who has lost two elections by a combined ten million votes, and has about as much political savvy as the average piece of tree bark. Trump is unwittingly doing as much to keep Nikki Haley in the game as she’s doing.
