Donald Trump just gave away that he knows he’s going to lose this trial
Donald Trump now wants us to believe that he’s glad he’s going on criminal trial in New York, because it gives him a chance to be acquitted and clear his name. And of course large chunks of the media want us to believe that there’s a good chance he’ll be acquitted, because this is the narrative that’ll keep more people tuned in than if they simply admit that Trump is likely to be convicted.
But even as Trump and the media keep trying to convince us that Trump going on criminal trial is somehow a good thing for Trump, we’re now seeing Trump give away that he doesn’t really see it this way at all.
Trump is now declaring on social media that “THE DECK IS STACKED AGAINST TRUMP IN NYC.” Trump’s weird insistence upon referring to himself in the third person in all caps aside, what stands out here is that Trump is telegraphing that he expects to lose. He’s already trying to lay the groundwork for what his narrative will be once he’s convicted: the deck was stacked against him.
Of course this narrative won’t help Trump much. It’s not going to get him out of a criminal conviction on thirty-four felony counts, and the criminal punishment that comes with it. Nor is this argument going to help Trump with the large chunks of Republican-leaning voters who are telling pollsters that they won’t vote for Trump if he’s a convicted felon.
But the real story is that Trump is giving away that he expects to be convicted in this trial. Given how sheltered and senile he is these days, this suggests that his own handlers have now broken the news to him that he’s likely to be convicted.
So no matter what Trump and his allies might say about this criminal trial, and no matter how much the media might try to convince us that Trump finally has us right where he wants us, the reality is that Trump himself is telling us that he expects to be convicted at trial. Let’s not lose sight of this as the trial gets underway, no matter how much hype we end up being fed to the contrary.
