Donald Trump is trying to install Kari Lake in an absolutely insane role
As Donald Trump prepares his return to power, he seems to have found a new stage for one of his most pathetic sycophants, Kari Lake, who last month lost the opportunity to ride on Trump’s coattails and represent Arizona in the U.S. Senate, two years after she lost the state’s gubernatorial election. Trump revealed this week he wants Lake to oversee Voice of America (VOA), the U.S.-funded broadcaster founded in 1942 that is charged with countering propaganda and promoting accurate news worldwide.
As with many of Trump’s choices, the selection of Lake, an outspoken election denialist and conspiracy theorist, to head an organization that is all about spreading the truth is bizarrely ironic. However, it may also come with a silver lining, especially for Arizonans who have feared her further political ascent despite losing two major statewide elections since 2022.
If Lake, who transformed from a local Fox anchor to calling reporters “monsters” while wishing to “defund the press,” as reported by the New York Times, ends up running VOA, she would no longer dominate Arizona politics. According to a report from Politico, many Arizonans are relieved by this prospect, despite the absurdity of Lake’s anticipated role.
Lake’s so-called appointment isn’t a done deal. Trump has yet to nominate someone to run the U.S. Agency of Global Media. Assuming that nominee gets confirmed by the Senate, that person along with the advisory board will then consider who should fill the VOA position.
Trump posted on Truth Social this week that Lake would ensure that “the American values of Freedom and Liberty are broadcast around the World FAIRLY and ACCURATELY, unlike the lies spread by the Fake News Media.” Posting on X, Lake boasted about her commitment to the truth, claiming, “I refused to spread false narratives. I’m still a great communicator. I still understand the importance of the truth. No more propaganda.”
If Lake succeeds in securing the VOA gig, she will give weary Arizonans a bit of a break. However, her gaslighting and denialism will transfer onto a more international stage, and the world will see first-hand that when Lake speaks of the importance of the truth, it’s really her truth—as she defines it—that will forever guide her.
