Donald Trump is seeing ghosts

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

If you’re wondering just how close we are to Jack Smith’s criminal indictment of Donald Trump for his January 6th-related crimes, CBS News is spelling out that it could hypothetically happen as soon as 1pm eastern time today. As for Trump’s mindset? Last night he made a social media post claiming that he’s ahead of Ronald Reagan in 2024 polling in New Hampshire. No really, he said this.

It all serves to show just how deeply into delusion Trump is sinking as his life falls apart. We looked at the poll Trump is quoting. Every person listed on it is a living person and an actual potential 2024 candidate, except for Reagan. So of course people didn’t pick him; they probably thought his name was included as a mistake.

But this is the kind of thing that Trump is now latching onto. As he’s gotten ever closer to indictment, he’s gone from his ‘I’m more popular than Biden’ fantasy to a new ‘I’m more popular than Reagan’ fantasy. Who’s next? We don’t want to know.

In any case, there’s an increasingly striking difference between the overwhelmingly thorough and competent moves that prosecutors are taking in order to take Trump down, and the overwhelming lack of any realistic attempt at Trump saving himself. Trump’s criminal defense strategy now consists of trying to convince himself that he can beat a dead guy in the next election. It’s more obvious than ever that Trump has no plan for saving himself. It’s how you know that he’s going to prison.
