Donald Trump is getting it from all sides
The weekend has been full of news speculating whether former “president” Donald Trump will finally face consequences for his unlawful behavior. Newsweek reported that the House Select Committee is indeed investigating the possibility (or probability) that Trump engaged in unlawful behavior. Likely, it is not helping Trump that federal Judge David Carter wrote last week that: “it is more likely than not” that Trump “attempted to obstruct the Joint Session of Congress” on January 6. Judge Carter further said that Trump and John Eastman came up with a scheme to overturn the 2020 election and “justified that plan with allegations of election fraud.” He continued: “But President Trump likely knew the justification was baseless, and therefore that the entire plan was unlawful.” Of course, he knew. He began this lie to get people riled up and then attempted to overturn the election by continuing the lie. Judge Carter called Trump and Eastman’s plan “unprecedented in American history.” Everything about Donald Trump is unprecedented. There was never anything about him that followed traditions or standards of behavior for a president of the United States. He continues this behavior today.
Last week, Trump openly called for Vladimir Putin to release information about Hunter Biden. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan-who is a Republican-said that Trump’s comments were “the worst possible thing you could do,” calling them “completely unacceptable.” Similarly, Governor Chris Sununu of New Hampshire called Trump “fucking crazy,” according to the Guardian at an event this past weekend. He further said that if anyone ever committed Trump to a mental institution, “he ain’t getting out.” While these words were spoken during a “roast,” they are true. In essence, Trump has now begun to wear out his welcome with additional Republicans, and this does not bode well for his political future or in any criminal investigations. Who would defend or take up for this nut?
Slate reported on potential criminal charges against Trump as well. That outlet reported that criminal investigators seem focused on Trump’s inner circle and have begun approaching an investigation of Trump. Slate linked to the Washington Post piece that revealed that a grand jury has issued subpoenas regarding the false electoral slates proposed by Trump’s scheme, and the magazine reported that Attorney General Merrick Garland is “following the evidence” against Trump and his enablers. As Newsweek reported, even if this investigation into Trump does not pan out, he will likely face criminal charges in Georgia for his interference in the election in that state. The grand jury is expected to be seated early next month, and Fani Willis, the Fulton County District Attorney, said that it could take from two months to a year to find all the information necessary to indict Donald Trump. You best believe she will be looking closely.
Donald Trump has escaped too many times and for too long. It is past time for him to pay for his crimes. His plan to retain power after he lost a free and fair election is despicable, and it didn’t work. He needs to learn his lesson in the best way possible, and jail might just do that for him.
