Donald Trump has unhinged “shithole” meltdown

Remember a few years ago when it leaked that Donald Trump had privately said that he didn’t want immigrants coming in from certain (nonwhite) countries because they were “shithole” countries? That remark seemed to hurt Trump in 2020 with voters in the middle. But Trump loves nothing more than to make the same mistake over and over again, so here we go again.

This time Trump is upping the ante. Instead of referring to other nations as shitholes, he’s referring to Washington DC as a shithole:

Trump figures that he has no chance of winning Washington DC’s electoral votes anyway, so he might as well attack the place. But on the whole this is pretty stupid. Trump is once again risking alienating voters toward the middle, by saying the kinds of things that moderate voters can’t explain away in their heads. But then Trump is going to prison anyway, so what’s the difference?
