Earlier this week the U.S. Court of Appeals shot down Donald Trump’s last ditch effort to stop or delay his second civil trial with E. Jean Carroll, and now that trial is set to start in about twelve days. Trump is taking the news poorly. Very poorly.

Trump has spent all day today ranting and raving about Carroll, in manic and obsessive and often disgusting fashion. There’s no point in quoting any of it; the story here is that he just can’t seem to stop posting about her.

In legal terms, there are two things at play here. On the one hand, because the trial isn’t yet underway and the trial judge hasn’t issued any gag orders, Trump isn’t going to get in trouble with the courts by attacking Carroll like this. On the other hand, Trump’s rant today is a continuation of his ongoing defamation against her, which is what the trial is about to begin with. So Carroll may be able to use today’s Trump rants as evidence to help get a verdict against him at trial, in which case Trump is digging himself an even deeper hole.

It’s important to keep in mind that while Trump’s behavior is inappropriate and unhinged, it can’t really be counted as an “intimidation tactic.” It obviously isn’t going to intimidate E. Jean Carroll, who has already come this far and has already secured one trial verdict against him.

The more accurate way to describe it might be that Donald Trump is simply pouting and throwing a tantrum. He’s learning the hard way that he can’t delay his trials no matter what he tries. Trump is powerless when it comes to what he’s up against, and he knows it, and he’s acting like a baby because of it.
