Donald Trump goes on delusional bender after Robert Mueller indicts the Russians
Special Counsel Robert Mueller brought the house this morning, so to speak, when he revealed that he’d obtained indictments against thirteen Russians for conspiring to rig the election in Donald Trump’s favor. It’s a crippling political blow against Trump, and it’s a prelude to the criminal indictments that are coming against him and his people. Trump, as per usual, is responding in a haze of delusion.
Here’s what Trump tweeted in response to the indictments: “Russia started their anti-US campaign in 2014, long before I announced that I would run for President. The results of the election were not impacted. The Trump campaign did nothing wrong – no collusion!” Let’s try to parse this. Trump is correct that the Russian began their campaign years ago. But that’s actually bad news for Trump, as it coincides with Trump’s trip to Russia in 2013 which was allegedly the origin of the Pee Pee Tape. But the rest of his tweet is just delusional.
What Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein actually announced today was that the Trump campaign was unwittingly working with these particular Russians. He was also clear that he was only speaking about “these indictments.” Based on today’s revelations, it’s fairly clear that Rosenstein and Mueller are laying the groundwork for similar charges against Trump’s people and the Russian that they were wittingly conspiring with.
Today was in no way, shape or form a vindication of Donald Trump or his campaign. It’s almost unfathomable, yet not at all surprising, that Trump has somehow managed to delusionally come away with this conclusion. But that appears to have been the point. Rosenstein and Mueller managed to shatter Trump’s presidency today by exposing it as a fully illegitimate Russian puppet show – and at the same time, they managed to sucker Trump into confidently sitting tight and allowing them to continue taking him down.
