Donald Trump caves
Donald Trump started off his criminal trial by committing a quick series of gag order violations, seemingly aimed at seeing what he could get away with. This prompted Judge Merchan to hold a hearing, during which he fined Trump and informed him that additional violations could result in jail time.
In the roughly forty-eight hours since the judge issued that warning, Trump hasn’t committed a single violation of his gag order. Even when he gave two bizarre rally speeches yesterday, he still made a point of avoiding violating the gag order. In other words, Trump is caving. He’s very much afraid of getting locked up, and so he’s cowering in the face of it.
We don’t know how long this will continue. Trump’s behavior is becoming more unstable and incoherent, so it could just be a matter of time before he forgets what’s going on and instinctively goes on a bender about a witness. But for now it’s clear that Trump is very afraid.
