When it was reported earlier this month that the January 6th Committee was looking to refer Donald Trump to the DOJ for criminal prosecution on charges ranging from obstruction of Congress to wire fraud, it was clear that the committee had Trump nailed. It wouldn’t have leaked such a thing to the media unless it was confident it could make such charges stick. Now Trump himself is admitting that the committee has him nailed.

Now that the U.S. Court of Appeals has ruled that the National Archives must turn over Trump’s records to the committee, Trump is appealing to the Supreme Court. This move won’t succeed, and it won’t buy him much time either. But his court filing to the Supreme Court is nonetheless noteworthy, because of what it gives away.

Trump and his lawyers are accusing the January 6th Committee of “seeking evidence of criminal activity.” No really, that’s what their court filing says. They’re asking the Supreme Court to block the committee from obtaining evidence against him, specifically because that evidence reveals he’s guilty.

This is the kind of last ditch legal move where you’ve decided to give up all appearances of innocence in order to argue that the people who are uncovering your guilt aren’t allowed to uncover your guilt. It’s endgame failure level desperation. It won’t work. The committee will soon have the evidence in question anyway. And the committee has spent the past couple weeks revealing it has a treasure trove of evidence against Trump already.

The January 6th Committee has Trump nailed. It knows it has Trump nailed. It’s been letting everyone know that it has Trump nailed. And now Trump is letting everyone know that he knows the committee has him nailed. The new year is going to be fascinating, to put it mildly.
