Donald Trump admits defeat

Donald Trump, like most Republican politicians, likes to talk about how he’s going to win no matter what – even in situations where the odds are against him. It’s part of the right wing strategy to appear strong at all times, while trying to convince the other side to give up and not bother fighting.

So when someone like Trump admits he’s unlikely to win a battle, it means he thinks there’s just about 100% chance he’s going to lose. That’s why it’s notable that Trump is now declaring on social media that “There is NO WAY I can be given a Fair (Biden) Trial on Monday with Judge Juan Merchan, who is totally conflicted and corrupt, presiding.”

This kind of rhetoric doesn’t help Trump in the legal arena in any way. Instead it’s his attempt (or an attempt on the part of whoever writes his social media posts) at spinning his upcoming trial loss politically. He’s going to be convicted, so the narrative is going to be that it was an unfair trial.

This may help Trump convince his lunatic base to stick with him. But it won’t help him outside of his base, because everyone else is going to look at his felony conviction in this trial as a sign that he really is the criminal that his detractors have always said he is. The real upshot here is that there’s nothing left for Trump to do but whine.
