Donald Trump abruptly pulls the plug on Elise Stefanik nomination

Donald Trump has nominated consistently horrid people to every one of his leadership positions, and thus far the worthless Republican Senate has confirmed nearly all of them. But now, in what can only be described as a panic move, Trump is abruptly withdrawing his nomination of Elise Stefanik for UN Ambassador. So what happened?

This morning there were media reports that Trump was considering pulling the plug on the Stefanik nomination because he’s just that afraid of losing majority control of the House. This afternoon Trump publicly confirmed that he has indeed pulled the plug, while making up generic nonsense reasons.

It’s not difficult to figure out why Trump and the GOP are worried. The three existing House special elections are facing blowout margins because they’re far-right districts. But Stefanik’s district only leans nine points Republican. Given what just happened in this week’s special election in Pennsylvania, where the Democrat outperformed by about fifteen points, there is a possibility that the Republicans could lose a special election to replace Stefanik.

This means that House Republicans now think they’re one resignation or medical issue away from losing the majority. That’s a big deal. If the House were to somehow flip, Trump wouldn’t be able to pass another piece of legislation, he’d be impeached, and the Democrats would be able to launch Trump investigations in every House committee.

Of course we can’t just sit back and wait for a “maybe” like this to happen. We have to keep fighting in the meantime. But Trump’s withdrawal of Stefanik, after the brutal week he’s had, means we do indeed have him on the ropes.
