Senate impeachment trial is already turning disastrous for Donald Trump and Mitch McConnell
The proverbial ink isn’t even yet dry on Donald Trump’s impeachment in the House, yet all eyes are already turning toward the Senate impeachment trial. We all know that Mitch McConnell and the Senate Republicans are looking to put on a ridiculous sham impeachment trial and rubber stamp Trump’s acquittal. The thing is, it’s already becoming clear that it’s not going to go well for them.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi was asked during her press conference tonight about whether she thinks the Senate impeachment trial is going to be fair, and whether she’s even wiling to send the articles of impeachment to the Senate. She responded by reading Mitch McConnell’s infamous quote about essentially letting Trump run his own trial, and then she said she’ll have to take a look at how the Senate process is shaping up before deciding whether to send the articles. But that was just the start of the trouble.
Even as Pelosi is making clear to McConnell that he’ll have to make concessions if he wants to ever get his hands on these articles of impeachment, Democratic Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal appeared on the Rachel Maddow show tonight and pointed out another trouble spot for McConnell. We keep seeing more ugly details and damning evidence surface in Trump’s Ukraine extortion scandal with each passing week. So even if McConnell gets to hold a Senate impeachment trial early next year, he’ll be having to try to make Trump look innocent even as new evidence keeps popping up, proving his guilt.
This is in addition to the fact that House Democrats are still fighting in court to obtain things like Donald Trump’s tax returns, Robert Mueller’s grand jury transcripts, John Bolton’s testimony, and so on. If they win these battles during the course of 2020, they can ratify even more articles of impeachment against Trump, forcing McConnell and the Senate to hold another impeachment trial after they’ve already acquitted him. The bottom line: this is going to be ugly for Trump and McConnell.
