Rudy Giuliani takes one last desperate swing as Robert Mueller moves in on him and Trump

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Last week Palmer Report pointed out that Rudy Giuliani had gone remarkably quiet of late. Based on the timing, it’s not difficult to parse why. The DOJ Inspector General publicly hinted that Giuliani was under criminal investigation, and after that he stopped trying to sabotage the Trump-Russia investigation for fear of getting nailed for obstruction of justice. But now Rudy is taking one last desperate swing at getting himself off the hook.

Back when Rudy Giuliani first announced he was joining Donald Trump’s legal defense team, he vowed to set up an interview between Trump and Robert Mueller which would somehow magically make the entire Trump-Russia probe go away within two weeks. None of that ended up happening, of course. Now Rudy is circling back to his original gambit, with a twist: he’s offering to have Trump do the interview, if Mueller lays out evidence beforehand that Trump is guilty. No, really.

This is not how anything works, so this plan is going nowhere. Even Rudy is admitting to the New York Times that his latest scheme is “unlikely” to work. But what stands out here is that even now that Rudy has brought an end to his lie-filled television interviews, he’s still taking one last desperate shot at making the interview happen, which was his original goal to begin with.

This raises the question: why has Rudy Giuliani spent the past few months desperately trying to get Donald Trump to sit down for an interview with Robert Mueller? Rudy rather obviously joined Trump’s team because he feared that he was a target of the investigation. Now that Rudy has confirmation that he’s a target, he’s still trying to make the interview happen. Perhaps Rudy thinks that the interview will magically end the probe. Perhaps Rudy thinks the interview will quickly end Trump’s presidency, and that’ll cause the investigation to cease before Rudy can be indicted. Rudy is clearly desperate, and even he doesn’t think this will work. But he’s taking his last big shot.
