Democrats win Wisconsin Supreme Court election and massively outperform elsewhere, in major blow to Donald Trump and Elon Musk

You knew something historic was brewing earlier this evening when the results came in for a pair of U.S. House special elections in Florida. The Republicans were willing to vacate these two seats (one to the cabinet and the other the Matt Gaetz ouster) because they’re extremely right wing districts. How right wing? The Republican candidates typically win these two districts by about thirty points each, because most of the voters in these districts are Republicans.
Yet tonight the Republican candidates only won these two races by about fourteen points each. In other words, this was a sixteen point swing toward the Democrats, in a pair of elections that everyone knew the Democrats had no chance of winning. In other words, Americans are now so thoroughly opposed to what Donald Trump is doing, the Democrats are suddenly over performing by double digits.
The shockingly close results in these non-competitive races raised the question of what might happen in an election that is competitive going in. It didn’t take long for us to get that answer, in the form of the evenly matched Wisconsin Supreme Court election. This is a race where, in a vacuum, based on the demographics of the state, you’d expect something close to a 50-50 result. But on a day when voters in Florida were leaning fifteen points closer to the Democrats than usual, it wasn’t a surprise that election expert Dave Wasserman unofficially called the Wisconsin Supreme Court election for the Democratic Party backed candidate when only one-third of the votes had been counted. That means it’s not going to be a close result. The Democratic backed candidate will end up winning this race by perhaps five to eight points. That’s massive, given that this was supposed to be a 50-50 result.
This is a huge blow to Donald Trump, whose entire agenda got resoundingly rejected tonight. It’s also a huge blow to Elon Musk, who poured as much money into a state Supreme Court race as a person could ever think to pour into a race. Musk saw this election as a referendum on what he’s been doing to the federal government, and voters ended up rejecting him as thoroughly as they just rejected Trump.
So what now? Today was a double whammy of great news for us. Democratic Senator Cory Booker’s twenty-five hour floor speech got as many as fifty million viewers on the live stream. And voters overwhelmingly leaned more toward the Democratic Party than usual in tonight’s results. This represents a ton of validation and momentum for our side and our cause. So let’s keep building on it going forward.
