Democrats make their move to try to sink Matt Gaetz
If Donald Trump wanted to take advantage of the Republican Senate’s complicity, all he had to do was nominate a low profile loyalist for Attorney General who could sneak through the Senate as a recess appointment without the public knowing or caring. Instead a senile Trump tripped over his own plan by picking Matt Gaetz, one of the very few people who couldn’t have gotten through a recess appointment quietly.
The Gaetz pick is already facing serious trouble. Multiple Republican Senators have publicly demanded to see the House Ethics Committee report on Gaetz’s scandals and criminal allegations. Today the committee met to vote on releasing the report. It was deadlocked upon party lines.
But now the Democrats are making their move. The Senate Judiciary Committee, which is still controlled by the Democrats, are now officially seeking the House Ethics Committee’s report on Matt Gaetz. It’s not clear what their endgame is, but this move may be what allows the Democrats on the House Ethics Committee to just hand the report over to the Senate without needing the support of the Republicans on the House Ethics Committee.
It’s important to remember that, in spite of a thousand viral tweets to the contrary, the Democrats do know how politics works. They know, better than any outside observers, how to make things happen within the political realm. I think we’re going to see this report. And while I’m not making any predictions or putting any odds on anything, it’s absolutely possible that the Gaetz nomination will fail.
