Now we know why the Democrats were so confident an FBI investigation would take Brett Kavanaugh down
Earlier this month, when Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh first came before the Senate Judiciary Committee for questioning, we saw various Democratic Senators use their limited time to focus on catching him in lies. Kamala Harris, a former prosecutor, even made a point of asking him the same question repeatedly, seeking additional specificity each time, in order to firmly establish that he was committing perjury.
This alone was not going to be enough to convince the Republicans on the committee to reject Kavanaugh, and the Democrats knew it. So why were they so focused on nailing him for perjury? When or how were they planning to use this to make a move against him? Was this something to stick in their back pocket, so they could impeach him the next time they control the Senate? We may never know the answer, because then the game changed.
After Brett Kavanaugh was accused of sexual assault, Senate Democrats immediately began calling for an FBI investigation. Those calls were swift, they were uniform, and there was no question they were coordinated. It raised the question of why the Democrats were so confident in this strategy. It wasn’t going to delay the confirmation process until after the midterms. Were the Democrats really counting on the FBI being able to prove a thirty-five year old attempted rape, or any of the other sexual assault allegations?
Last night we learned, courtesy of the Washington Post, the FBI is now free to use its investigation into Brett Kavanaugh to criminally pursue him for any perjury he committed while testifying to the Senate. It makes logical sense that the FBI is investigating the assault claims; Kavanaugh addressed those claims directly during his testimony; therefore any crimes he committed during that testimony are fair game
So now we know why the Democrats were so confident that an FBI investigation would take Brett Kavanaugh down. They had already nailed him for perjury, and they were waiting for a time when they would be allowed to use it against him. Once the sexual assault allegations came along, all they needed to do was find a way to get the FBI to investigate Kavanaugh and – sure enough – now he’s on the legal hook for perjury.
