Deer in the headlights
As you’re aware, I often use metaphors in my work. My favorite metaphor for the GOP is that of a group of deer on the road. This is because that is what they look like and are. Deer — mute, frightened deer, staring at the headlights, unable or perhaps unwilling to get out of the way.
For years now, we’ve been warning them. In fact, many people have been warning them — what would happen if they did not disassociate themselves from donald trump. And yet they do not listen. Even though they see the proof of the betrayal, they still stand in the road, watching the beams of the headlights, eyes huge but poker-faced unwilling to get out of the way.
Some do it because they like Trump. He taught them his cruelty well, and they used him to learn from. But not all of them Some want to leap aside — run from the unending rain and into the safety of shelter.
Only they can’t. Some are more afraid of their base than Trump. Some seem to think his followers will just fade away, and they won’t have to do anything. And most are just plain cowards.
Cowards. There isn’t any other word that will do. And even as Donald Trump tweeted out that he thinks he will be arrested, some Republicans actually defended him!
A friend and I watched together the almost unbelievable coverage of fierce republicans defending their honored one. It is tough to believe, but the fact is republicans are ruining their future. One could make the case they did that long ago when they started losing election after election.
So let republicans stay in the road staring at the headlights. It will make then look ridiculous. What will they do in 2024? Rename themselves the jailbird party? Will their motto be “have prison visitors, will travel?”
Perhaps their campaign theme will be the insurrectionists singing the Star Spangled Banner. Perhaps they will appear in orange jumpsuits to honor their outlaw who stole their honor. And we will continue to win and win and to win. We will leave the GOP in the dust, in the road, standing still as we spring past them into victory.
