Ahead of his arrest, Roger Stone goes off the deep end
We’re now on Day Five of Roger Stone Arrest Watch, and don’t get too excited yet, because the grand jury proceedings suggest it could still be another couple weeks before Stone is indicted and arrested. But five days after he announced on Meet The Press that he knows he’s going to be indicted, suffice it to say that Stone is going completely off the deep end, even by his standards.
For reasons known only to him, Roger Stone thought it would be a good idea to run his mouth about the Trump-Russia scandal to Rolling Stone magazine, even as a grand jury is busy deciding his fate in that same scandal. Stone is insisting during the interview that he didn’t break any laws during the 2016 election, and we’ll have to let the legal system decide that. Stone still thinks he’s getting arrested, although he’s suggesting that Mueller will “fabricate some offense by me.” So we can already see the legal defense he’s trying to put in place. But then things get weird.
During the lengthy interview, Stone began ranting about how Hillary Clinton is a “craven, corrupt witch.” But don’t worry, Stone also had plenty of unhinged insults for the people on his own side of the fence. He referred to Steve Bannon in this manner: “it looks to me as though he chases down hobos to get their clothing.” It makes you wonder why Trump’s own goons are always so eager to take each other down. It’s as if they’re all bad people, and they recognize that in each other, but they each think they’re the only good one in the bunch. Then came the real giveaway.
Here’s the money quote from Roger Stone: “The New York Times reported on January 20th, 2017, that I was the subject of a FISA warrant. A FISA warrant can only be obtained against a U.S. citizen if they’re actively involved in espionage on behalf of a foreign power. There is no way that I meet that criteria, which means that the FISA warrant in question was obtained for political purposes.” The key word there is espionage. Stone is trying to set up an ‘I didn’t commit espionage, so these other criminal charges against me don’t count’ defense. Notably, this comes just as Stone’s close pal Alex Jones announced that he’s also being investigated for “espionage.” We see a trend here.
