Four crucial things you can expect to happen in tonight’s Democratic Debate
Even as Donald Trump’s presidency is collapsing in a heap of impeachment and criminality, and the United States is withering on the world stage, the contest to replace Trump is coming into focus tonight. Here’s what to expect from tonight’s 2020 Democratic presidential primary debate:
Trump’s impeachment: The top story in the nation is the ongoing impeachment process against Donald Trump. Much of tonight’s debate will focus on impeachment and Trump’s unraveling criminal scandals and coverups. The Democratic candidates all largely hold the same position on impeachment – but which of them will manage to communicate it best?
Hunter Biden: Now that the “Hunter Biden scandal” has been fully exposed as a phony scandal, we’ll see what happens with it tonight. The moderators will surely ask Joe Biden to defend himself and his son against this fake scandal, which will be easy for him to do. More importantly, the other Democratic candidates will be given the opportunity to try to score cheap points by pretending the fake Biden scandal is real. We’ll see if any of them are dumb enough to take the bait. If they do, they should fall through a trap door.
Elizabeth Warren vs Bernie Sanders: Prevailing media narratives aside, Joe Biden hasn’t actually fallen any significant amount in the polls. It’s just that Elizabeth Warren has been picking off a lot of supporters from Bernie Sanders and other lower-polling candidates, and it’s allowed her to catch up to Biden. Now Biden and Warren are essentially tied. Tonight is Bernie’s (perhaps last) chance to convince primary voters to come back to him – and he’ll have to demonstrate that he’s recovered enough from his heart attack to remain a viable candidate.
The dark horse: If Bernie Sanders does continue sliding, someone will emerge as the third place candidate and find their way into the discussion along with Biden and Warren going forward. Tonight will be a prime opportunity for a lower-polling candidate to have a strong showing and make a move.
