Dark Brandon just took Kevin McCarthy to the woodshed

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

There’s a whole lot of people who aspire to be President of the United States – but it’s a job that’s given to few people – and there’s even fewer people who can do it well, much less survive over a year of campaigning and come out a finalist. There’s fairly few people who aspire to be Speaker of the House one day by comparison, an even more frustratingly difficult job that few do well. Kevin McCarthy, who only won the speakership by one vote, definitely isn’t one of them – and he’s quickly wishing he never put his name in for consideration. After cutting a deal with President Biden that didn’t come anywhere near the spending cuts his party was pushing for, the House Freedom Caucus is now very openly making noise about possibly ousting him.

Despite everyone saying that we were in a no-win position due to the GOP holding the House and the deal would be disastrous no matter what, McCarthy’s chance to show strength and “fiscal responsibility” and whatnot has clearly blown up in his face. In desperation, he looks to the same House Democrats who struck down nearly everything he requested, only to have them not so subtly say they’ll wait and see what happens in any “motion to vacate” votes the Freedom Caucus will try. In doing so, Hakeem Jeffries’ message was clear: Get your people under control if you want to sit with the grownups. Republicans clearly can’t maintain order in their own party and it’s clear now for all to see – that’s why we need to keep them from all the levers of power in 2024.
