Brett Kavanaugh tries to do last minute damage control as his nomination falls apart
Brett Kavanaugh’s Supreme Court nomination is in severe trouble. We know this not simply because various Republican Senators have spent the day in panic mode, or because retired conservative Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens called for Kavanaugh to be rejected, or even because the GOP appears to be admitting it doesn’t think it has the votes. No, we know that Kavanaugh is in trouble because he just told us as much, in his own words.
Tonight the Wall Street Journal published an op-ed written by Brett Kavanaugh himself. This one passage alone reveals what he’s most worried about: “I was very emotional last Thursday, more so than I have ever been. I might have been too emotional at times. I know that my tone was sharp, and I said a few things I should not have said .. Going forward, you can count on me to be the same kind of judge and person I have been for my entire 28-year legal career: hardworking, even-keeled, open-minded, independent and dedicated to the Constitution and the public good.”
In other words, Kavanaugh and his team are now worried that the GOP swing vote Senators might reject him based on his hyper-partisan, maniacal, and mentally unstable testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week. Various observers on social media have said that Kavanaugh’s op-ed reminds them of men who have beaten their wives and then promised never to do it again.
In any case, the mere existence of this op-ed is proof that Brett Kavanaugh and his people are worried about whether the GOP has enough votes to confirm him. So if anyone in the Resistance thinks that Kavanaugh is a lock for confirmation, suffice it to say that Kavanaugh is far less than confident about his chances.
