Cover of darkness

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Nighttime is the keeper of secrets, the time when monsters venture from their habitats to engage in illicit and unsavory behavior they don’t want anyone to see. And that’s indeed what happened the other night in Florida. It was dark. It was night. And the monster was out.

Perhaps he thought people would not notice, that he could fly under the radar — under cover of darkness. That’s not what happened, though. We’d been expecting this from the monster we call Ron Desantis.

And nighttime was the right time — the right time for DeSantis to sign into law a six-week abortion ban for the state of Florida. As if he hadn’t hurt the state enough. So when millions of Floridians woke in the early morning, blinking in the sunlight, they would hear of how their monstrous governor had betrayed them.

People in this country don’t WANT a six-week abortion ban. Indeed, most people don’t want a ban at all. But Ron is beholden to the few people who do — Maga Republicans. And so he waited and did the cruel deed of signing this bizarre monstrosity of a bill into law — In the dead of night, under cover of darkness.

The south is now effectively a barren desert, abortion free, a new Republic of Gilead, a new world order for all who live there. I don’t see how Desantis expects to run for president on something like this. It seems to me an impossible task for him. And he is terrified.

How do I know this? Because shortly after the signing, DeSantis gave a speech on Friday — and failed to mention his new accomplishment. He wants the best of both worlds. He wanted to implement it, but he didn’t want to own it. We have to make sure that he does.

Everywhere we must shout: “Ron DeSantis implemented a six-week abortion ban.” We must let everybody know. Floridians don’t want this. The American people don’t want this. But he did it — under cover of darkness. And in brightness, Mr. Ron DeSantis will find out just how terrible the backlash will be.
