Congressman Ted Lieu reveals why the Democrats won today’s battle over the 1/6 investigation

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Most of the Republicans in the Senate behaved shamefully today when they voted down what would have been a bipartisan commission to investigate the January 6th Capitol attack. But as Palmer Report has explained, this is a win for the Democrats, who now get to appoint a select committee to investigate the Capitol attack, while also getting to hit the Republicans for having tried to obstruct the investigation.

Congressman Ted Lieu has tweeted an explanation for why this is an even bigger win for the Democrats: “Mitch McConnell thinks he can stop the full truth from coming out. He cannot. The House can empower a bipartisan select congressional committee to investigate the insurrection. The select committee would also have stronger subpoena power because GOP Members can’t block subpoenas.”

Speaker Nancy Pelosi already strongly hinted in a press conference last week that she would indeed appoint a 1/6 select committee if today’s Senate vote failed. Mitch McConnell and the Republicans had an opportunity to have more control over the 1/6 investigation, but with today’s vote they forfeited that. Now we’ll see a more fast-moving and thorough 1/6 congressional investigation than we otherwise would have.
