GOP Congressman throws Donald Trump under the bus

Dear Palmer Report readers, we all understand the difficult era we're heading into. Major media outlets are caving to Trump already. Even the internet itself and publishing platforms may be at risk. But Palmer Report is nonetheless going to lead the fight. We're funding our 2025 operating expenses now, so we can keep publishing no matter what happens. I'm asking you to contribute if you can, because the stakes are just so high. You can donate here.

Yesterday we saw two moderate Republican Governors come out in favor of Donald Trump’s impeachment. This was a clear sign that Trump is in real trouble, and it left us asking when or if any Republicans in Congress might begin publicly throwing Trump under the bus to try to save themselves. Well, it just happened.

Republican Congressman James Comer of Kentucky (not to be confused with former FBI boss James Comey) appeared on CNN this morning and stated that, because the Trump White House tried to hide Donald Trump’s phone records on a codeword protected server, it means Congress must investigate. To be clear, Comer is trying to play both sides, by stating that Joe Biden’s phony scandal must also be investigated. But that nonsense aside, it’s a big deal that a Republican Congressman is calling for Trump’s Ukraine scandal to be investigated.

This is very different verbiage than what we’re hearing from GOP House leaders like Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, who is insisting that the Ukraine scandal is just revenge because Trump won the 2016 election, and House Judiciary Committee ranking member Doug Collins, who is still calling this a “fake impeachment” as if it weren’t even happening.

It’s not that James Comer is planning to vote in favor of articles of impeachment. It’s that he’s worried enough about Donald Trump going down over this scandal, and the scandal takin the entire GOP down with him in 2020, that he’s already trying to cover his own backside by calling for Trump to be investigated. That’s a tacit endorsement of the House impeachment inquiry, whether he’s backing it or not. We’ll see who else in the House GOP tries taking the same backside-covering position.
