Donald Trump might as well have just confessed

Imagine a guy who gets accused of robbing a bank, but even as the evidence piles up against him, continues to deny that he did it – and he even denies that the bank was robbed at all. Then, after a grand jury brings indictments against those who conspired to help the guy rob the bank, he finally admits the bank robbery did happen, and blames the police for not having arrested his co-conspirators sooner. That’s where we now stand in Donald Trump’s Russia scandal.

Here’s what Trump tweeted this morning: “Obama was President up to, and beyond, the 2016 Election. So why didn’t he do something about Russian meddling?” To be clear, President Obama did try to put out a statement warning the American people, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell threatened to publicly accuse Obama of playing partisan games with it. So the blame is entirely on McConnell, who has taken millions of dollars from a Kremlin oligarch. But the real upshot here is that Trump just basically confessed.

Trump is so eager to blame the black guy for his problems and failings, like he’s always done, that he didn’t stop to think this one through. We all know the Russians were influencing the election on his behalf. Trump just admitted it in this tweet. We all know that various Russians met with everyone from his son to his National Security Adviser to his Attorney General while conspiring to rig the election in his favor. Trump just tried to preemptively blame Obama for the fact that his campaign committed treason.

So now we can all see where this is going. Even after everyone in Donald Trump’s campaign and family has been indicted for conspiring with the Russians to rig the election, Trump will still be trying to blame it all on President Obama for not having found a way to stop it. That argument might work for Trump’s racist base, but good luck using it in a court of law.
