Michael Cohen makes mystery visit to federal courthouse amid major Trump-Russia revelation
Yesterday we brought you the news that Special Counsel Robert Mueller is investigating a suspicious multimillion dollar Russian money trail involving attendees of Donald Trump Jr’s Russia meeting, which took place at the same time as the meeting. So many of Donald Trump’s people have now flipped on him, it’s never entirely clear these days who the source might be for any given investigative lead. But then Michael Cohen suddenly surfaced.
On Thursday night, Michael Cohen revealed on Twitter via his attorney that he has provided “critical information to the Mueller investigation without a cooperation agreement.” This came after reports earlier in the day that Cohen had spent the past month telling Robert Mueller about Donald Trump’s connections to Russia. It turns out Michael Cohen showed up at a federal courthouse in New York City yesterday afternoon, and according to CNBC, no one among the media or the public knew in advance that he was going to be there.
So just what was Cohen doing at the courthouse yesterday? We have no idea. He recently pleaded guilty to eight felonies and he’s agreed to eventually go to prison, so it’s possible that he simply had to show up to court for mundane transactional reasons. But in such case, one would have expected his visit to appear in advance on some docket somewhere, and best anyone can tell, that didn’t happen.
This suggests that Michael Cohen may have been there to meet with Robert Mueller’s people. Now that his ongoing cooperation with Mueller has become public knowledge, there would be no reason for them to keep meeting clandestinely. In fact, for all we know, it’s possible Mueller wanted this meeting to be noticed by the cameras, just to rattle Donald Trump. That’s before getting to the unresolved question of whether this meeting had anything to do with this new revelation about the Trump Tower meeting. There are now more moving parts than answers.
