Michael Avenatti explains why Michael Cohen is even “dumber than I thought”
Donald Trump’s former “fixer” Michael Cohen has spent the past few weeks taking one thinly veiled shot at Trump after another, even as the mainstream media keeps reporting that Cohen’s friends believe he’s going to cut a plea deal. Last night Cohen announced that he’s given an interview to Good Morning America, and that it’ll air on ABC this morning. Some are hoping this is a sign that Cohen is indeed going to flip on Trump. But not everyone is impressed.
Michael Cohen posted this tweet last night: “Spent Saturday afternoon with George Stephanopoulos ABC (not on camera) interview for Monday’s GMA. My silence is broken!” Even as this piqued people’s curiosity, a number of people began asking why the interview took place off camera. ABC would not have wanted it this way, so it had to have been at Cohen’s insistence. Cohen’s primary nemesis, Stormy Daniels attorney Michael Avenatti, was quick to offer his view.
Avenatti tweeted this message late last night: “If Mr. Cohen really gave an “off camera” interview to George Stephanopoulos (whom I respect) for GMA, he is dumber than I thought. He is playing games & trying to play both sides. There is only one way he can have any legitimate shot at saving his reputation.” He has a point about Cohen trying to play both sides by using the media to get his message out there while refusing to do it in his own voice. We think we may have an explanation.
It’s been widely reported that Michael Cohen is just days away from arrest if he doesn’t cut a plea deal first. Whichever way Cohen ends up going with it, he has to be very careful with his words. If he says something incriminating about himself in the interview, prosecutors can use it as evidence against him at trial. He could also weaken his own hand at the negotiating table if he says something stupid. So he was good reason to be careful. But we agree with Avenatti that Cohen is trying to have it both ways by doing this interview at all. It’s time for him to do the right thing for America and simply flip on Trump.
