Michael Cohen just made a move that changes everything
Michael Cohen’s interview with Good Morning America this morning was predictably a mixed bag. As we explained last night, there wasn’t much he was going to be able to say. If he goes to trial, anything he says in a TV interview is going to be used against him by prosecutors. If he’s cutting a deal, the prosecutors don’t want him revealing the evidence on television. But Cohen did announce one move this morning that changes everything – and it’s the exact move that Michael Flynn and Rick Gates made shortly before they cut their plea deals.
Michael Cohen revealed during his interview that he’s in the process of ending his joint legal defense arrangement with Donald Trump. This is a big deal becuase it’s the move you’re required to make before cutting a plea deal. Two people can only mount a joint defense if they’re mounting the same defense, with no conflict of interest.
When the mainstream media began reporting last week that Michael Cohen was telling his friends and family that he was preparing to cut a deal, Palmer Report advised readers to keep an eye out for whether Cohen ended his joint legal defense with Trump, because that would be concrete evidence that Cohen was cutting a deal. Sure enough, we’ve now arrived.
This still doesn’t guarantee that Michael Cohen will cut a deal. He could change his mind and reestablish his joint defense. He could be lying to begin with. But this is concrete evidence that Cohen is going to cut a deal. Cohen is no longer merely telling his friends that he wants a divorce from Donald Trump; he’s finally filed the divorce papers.
